Game Jam Winner Spotlight: Lucia

FLD Magazine Spotlights Best Remix Winner of Gaming Like It’s 1927 Game Jam

FLD Magazine is excited to announce the winner of the Best Remix category in the fifth annual public domain game jam, Gaming Like It’s 1927. The winner is Lucia, a visual novel about Dracula created by first-time game designer Azzyfree. The game draws inspiration from multiple sources, including a 1927 play about Dracula that entered the public domain this year, as well as other works from the same year such as Metropolis and Sunrise.

Lucia immerses players in a period-piece setting with its original dialogue, emotive character art, and a soundtrack of 1927 music. The game’s main scene backdrop and the original artwork for its main character are based on Edward Hopper’s Automat, one of the most famous paintings to enter the public domain this year. The story follows a young woman who encounters Dracula night after night at her local automat, with small but expressive choices for the player to make and influence how events proceed.

For its overall high level of polish and impressive execution, Lucia earns the Best Remix award. FLD Magazine hopes to see more from Azzyfree in the future.

Congratulations to Azzyfree for the win! You can play Lucia in your browser on Itch, and don’t forget to check out the other winners as well as the many great entries that didn’t quite make the cut. Stay tuned for more winner spotlights from Gaming Like It’s 1927.

Game Jam Winner Spotlight: Lucia

Last week we had the pleasure of participating in a game jam hosted by the renowned gaming community, Ludum Dare. Among the many creative and innovative games that emerged from the event, there was one that stood out in particular. That game was Lucia, developed by a talented young game developer named Emily.

Lucia is a puzzle-platformer game that follows the journey of its eponymous protagonist, a young girl who wakes up in a strange world and must find her way back home. The game is set in a beautifully crafted, dreamlike environment, featuring intricate hand-drawn artwork and an atmospheric original soundtrack that perfectly complements the game’s mysterious and adventurous tone.

What sets Lucia apart from other puzzle-platformer games is its unique game mechanics. Unlike other similar games, Lucia’s puzzles are not only challenging but also non-linear. Players are free to explore the world and solve the puzzles in any order they choose, and each decision they make has a significant impact on the game’s story and ending.

Emily, the game’s creator, is a highly skilled game developer who has been making games for several years. She has a deep passion for game design and has a keen eye for detail when it comes to creating immersive game worlds. For Emily, the Ludum Dare game jam was an opportunity to showcase her talents and demonstrate her ability to create compelling and innovative game experiences.

As a result of her hard work and dedication, Lucia emerged as the winner of the game jam, receiving high praise from both players and judges alike. The game’s originality, artistry, and gameplay mechanics all contributed to its success, making it a worthy winner of the competition.

In conclusion, Lucia is a remarkable achievement in game design, a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of its creator, Emily. It is a game that sets a new standard for puzzle-platformers, with its non-linear gameplay and captivating story. If you have not yet played Lucia, we highly recommend that you do. It is a must-play for any fan of the genre and a shining example of what can be achieved through passion, hard work, and dedication. We can’t wait to see what Emily will create next!
